"Before Zero Hour in July 1916 I had a horrible dream. I envisioned this horrible death's head which filled me with a long prolonged anguished fear. I lived through a long, prolonged bombardment. The nights were like a twilight illuminated by the continual gun flashing on the clouds. Fourtunately, as dawn approached I regained an inherent sense of courage"
